The Journey from Competence to Confidence: Finding Your Enhanced Performance

Many people believe confidence is the starting point of success. They wait until they feel more confident before speaking up, accepting a leadership role, or taking on a new challenge. However, confidence rarely comes first.

One of the most fascinating insights into confidence comes from the Spanish language. The word for trust is confianza. The word traces its roots to the Latin fidere, meaning to trust, to have faith, or to believe. The prefix con- means with, giving us a powerful way to reflect on the word: confianza which represents being with faith—not blind faith, but faith built through experience, learning, and purposeful action.

Confidence is not something we simply decide to have. It is something we develop. Every time we practice a skill, solve a difficult problem, learn from failure, or push beyond our comfort zone, we strengthen our competence. Each successful repetition provides evidence that we are capable. Over time, that evidence transforms into confidence—not because someone told us to believe in ourselves, but because we have repeatedly demonstrated to ourselves that we can.

Consider learning to drive a car. At first, every action requires conscious thought. You think about the mirrors, the pedals, the steering wheel, your speed, and the traffic around you. The experience can feel mentally exhausting because your brain is building new neural pathways. Then something remarkable happens.

Through consistent practice, those pathways become stronger. The brain begins to automate the process. Actions that once required deliberate thought become natural. Driving becomes second nature because competence has become deeply embedded through repetition.

The same principle applies to leadership and professional growth. Whether it is communicating effectively, regulating emotions, making sound decisions, resolving conflict, or coaching others, these are not simply talents that some people possess. They are competencies developed through intentional practice. As these behaviors are repeated, they become habits. Those habits become strengths. Those strengths create confidence.

Confident individuals are more willing to take initiative, navigate uncertainty, communicate with clarity, and remain composed under pressure. They no longer spend their energy wondering whether they are capable. Instead, they direct that energy toward achieving meaningful results.

This is where enhanced performance begins. Enhanced performance is not the product of confidence alone. It is the natural outcome of confidence built upon genuine competence. It is the point where preparation meets opportunity, where intentional practice becomes instinctive, and where one's actions consistently reflect their highest level of capability.

Perhaps this is the true meaning of confianza.

It is not merely believing in yourself. It is developing such a deep trust in your abilities that your preparation, experience, and practice allow you to perform with confidence, consistency, and purpose.

So instead of asking, "How can I become more confident?"

Consider asking a different question: "What competence am I need to develop today that will strengthen my confidence tomorrow?"

Because confidence is not where the journey begins. It is where competence leads. And when competence becomes confidence, confidence becomes enhanced performance.
